“You know that thing when you see someone cute and he smiles and your heart kind of goes like warm butter sliding down hot toast? Well that’s what it’s like when I see a store. Only it’s better.” – Rebecca Bloomwood
I’m the type of guy who isn’t into romantic anything. I don’t like the romantic comedies. I’m more the rough and rugged type. Give me an action packed, thriller movie and I’m content. Occasionally, I will watch something funny for what I like to call ’shits n giggles’. Well, that’s pretty much why I decided to review Confessions of a Shopaholic. It seemed funny enough for me to watch it with the girlfriend without being bored to tears or annoyed enough to watch to the point where I want to stab my eyes out with sporks.
The trailer for Confessions of a Shopaholic captures many of the funniest scenes. Luckily, they aren’t the only funny scenes in the movie, Otherwise, I would have been terribly disappointed. I’m not going to say I loved this film, because that would be a lie. This movie has romantic cliches and plenty of cheesiness; the kinds of things that make me shy away from reviewing movies deemed romantic comedies. But, the funny moments are interspersed enough throughout the movie to engage and entertain even those guys like me who won’t stomach another Cameron Diaz movie, even if the girlfriend begged (luckily, mine detests Cameron Diaz, but that’s neither here nor there).

Without Pretty Woman I don’t know where the modern chick flick would be. This is one of the first hardcore chick flicks that really set the standard for the light humor, impossible love story scenario that peppers the theaters all too often these days. While I am not a fan of the majority of chick flicks, I have to admit, that Pretty Woman has always had a special place in my heart. I’ve seen it at least 50 times. When I was younger I could recite nearly every single line in the movie on key. Like most young girls there was just something about this movie that was addicting.
Despite being a chick flick, Pretty Woman offers a fun, unconventional storyline and good acting. It’s not your typical Cameron Diaz movie with a weak and brainless female lead and a dopey male interested in said lead just because she’s female and in the right spot. Instead, Roberts is a smart, spunky lead who is more a victim of circumstance. Despite not being educated, Roberts character manages to teach educated people the importance of simple pleasures. It’s hard not to fall in love with her.
As it stands this is one of my favorite chick flicks. The only one I have more love for has to be When Harry Met Sally. These are just two movies that I could watch over and over again, which makes the progression to Blu-ray even more exciting. It opens the idea to a better quality and new features, which is always a good thing.
I wouldn’t say this is a family movie, but I hardly find it deserving of an R rating. Teenagers could easily get away with watching this as the themes here are not as adult as they are made out to be. Sure, Roberts plays a prostitute, but the only trick she picks up is Gere. When you think of it like that, it wasn’t a bad profession. Of course, that’s the beauty of movies. I’m sure not too many Richard Gere’s are trolling the Boulevard looking for a girl in a wig and a bad outfit to give them directions.

Ghost is one of those movies that I’ve seen more than once. While it’s a good movie, I haven’t seen it in quite some time. Part of the reason for this is that I never owned Ghost on DVD before. It’s not that I don’t like this movie enough to own it on DVD, because I do. It just wasn’t one of those movies I thought about owning.
The other reason why I haven’t seen Ghost in a while is because I haven’t managed to catch it on television recently. The movie was on TV quite a bit throughout the 90s, but now, I just haven’t happened upon this movie on television. So, when I learned that I’d be getting Ghost in Blu Ray, I was actually quite happy. I do like this movie, so it’s nice to finally have this collection.
Ghost received mixed reviews from critics, initially, but grossed hundreds of millions of dollars both domestically and worldwide. These days, the film is rated more favorably by today’s critics. The movie went through a series of actors before Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg were cast. In fact, Whoopi would not have been cast had it not been for Swayze, who demanded she be placed in the role of Oda Mae.

I did not watch the first Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie. I don’t know why, but I am not a huge fan of the chick flick. So, the idea that four best friends of all different shapes and sizes could bond over a pair of pants that magically fit them all perfectly was not something I was rushing out to see. It sounded awful to me. Granted, I knew that it would probably be wildly successful, but still it sounded awful and I refused to watch it.
My mother, the lover of all things chick flick, demanded I see it. I didn’t tell her “no”. I just kind of put it off. I didn’t want to see it and the last time she forced me to watch a movie I didn’t want to see, all I got from it was something called “The Penis Song.” She gave up the regular pursuit of getting me to watch the original movie, but made sure to remind me when she saw it on television. Our conversation would go something like:
“So, have you seen that movie yet? You really should watch it. You’re going to love it.”
“The movie about the pants?”
“Yes that one. You will like it I swear.”
“Right and it’s about four girls that wear pants, right?”
“Oh nevermind!”
